Butter price and flour price trend: the bakery ingredient price index
The butter price and flour price trend that matters to a baker is the one you pay at the store, not a commodity chart, and that is what this monthly index will track. It is not published yet: the first edition needs enough bakers to opt in and an update to our privacy policy, so this page shows no numbers today. Here is what it will measure, how, and what you can do about rising baking ingredient prices in 2026 right now.
What the index will measure
Each month, the typical price home and micro bakers paid for the ingredients they buy most, and how it moved against the month before and the same month last year.
- Butter, per pound or kilo
- All-purpose and bread flour
- Eggs, per dozen
- White and brown sugar
- Cream, milk and cream cheese
- Chocolate and cocoa
How the butter and flour price trend will be built
In Farinu, bakers record what they pay for each ingredient so their recipe costs stay right. Only bakeries that choose to share will be counted, and only as anonymous, aggregated figures: no bakery, store or person can be identified, and a figure will be shown only when enough bakeries reported it.
Prices are normalized to a common unit, grouped by country and currency, and summarized as a median so one unusual purchase does not move the result.
What to do about rising ingredient prices today
You do not need the index to protect your margin. Record the new price when you buy butter or flour, and Farinu recosts every recipe that uses it, sub-recipes included. If a product drops below its target markup on any price list, you get a margin alert with a suggested price.
For example, if your butter goes from 4.50 to 5.25 dollars a pound and a pound cake uses half a pound, its cost rises by about 0.38 dollars. An alert shows which products that pushes below target and what to charge instead.
