A Bakesy alternative that knows what each order costs you
If you want a Bakesy alternative, the short answer is this: Bakesy is built to take orders, with a shop page, order forms, invoices and payments, while Farinu is built to know your numbers, with recipe costing, suggested prices, margin alerts and a monthly P&L, and it also tracks customers, custom orders, deposits and balances. Bakesy does not mention recipe costing on its site or app listing. If your orders already arrive by WhatsApp or Instagram and what you are missing is knowing whether each cake makes money, Farinu is the closer fit. Farinu also has an online shop whose order requests arrive as draft orders, but it takes no payments: if customers must pay online when they order, Bakesy covers that and Farinu does not.

Bakesy vs Farinu at a glance
Both apps are made for home and micro bakers, but they start from opposite ends of the business. Bakesy starts at the customer: a Bakesy Shop website, custom order forms, an availability calendar, branded invoices and automated receipts. Its Premium plan adds a revenue dashboard, inventory, customer reminders and discount codes.
Farinu starts at the recipe: what every ingredient, box, hour of your time, machine and fixed cost adds to a product, what you should charge for it, and what you actually earned last month. Orders, deposits, sales, production and stock sit on top of those costs, so every order shows what it is worth to you, not only what the customer owes.
Why a Bakesy alternative needs recipe costing
Most home bakers set prices by looking at what others charge, then hope the gap between price and ingredients is big enough. It usually is not, because the ingredients are only part of the cost. Boxes, cake boards, ribbon, gas, the mixer wearing out, and above all your hours rarely make it into the price.
An order app makes it easy to sell more, which is good only if each sale earns something. When butter or chocolate goes up, a low price that used to break even starts losing money on every order, and nothing in an order screen warns you.
A worked example: one custom cake, costed and ordered
Here is an example with made-up but realistic numbers. A customer asks for an 8-inch two-layer chocolate cake for a birthday. In Farinu the recipe is already costed: ingredients come to $14.20 including the ganache sub-recipe, the box and board add $2.10, and two and a half hours of your time at $18 an hour add $45.00. A share of your oven and fixed costs adds $3.00. Total cost: $64.30.
With a target markup of 40 percent, Farinu suggests about $90 on your retail price list, rounded to your rounding step. You create the order for that customer, with their WhatsApp number, at $90, confirm it, and they pay a $45 deposit. The order moves to deposit paid on its own.
When you log the bake for that order, it moves to in production. You deliver it, and since $45 is still due, Farinu offers a WhatsApp link with a balance reminder already written. Once the balance is paid, the order becomes paid and its lines are recorded as sales, so they show up in your monthly P&L.
If cocoa rises next month and that cake drops below your target, Farinu opens a margin alert with the new suggested price. You accept it or keep your price. In an app without costing, you would only see the same $90 order and never know the margin had shrunk.
Where Bakesy is the better choice
To be fair about it, Bakesy does several things Farinu does not. If these matter most to you, Bakesy is worth a look.
- A shop that takes payment with the order, where the Farinu shop only collects the request and you agree the deposit.
- Branded invoices filled in from the order request.
- Collecting payments and sending automated receipts, with cash, bank transfer, Venmo, Zelle, PayPal and other methods.
- Customer reviews and comments on orders.
- On Premium: discount codes, tips (US only) and automated customer reminders.
Where Farinu goes further
Farinu covers the money side of a small bakery end to end. Costing, suggested prices, price lists and margin alerts are free for up to 10 recipes, and so are customers, orders and the order calendar for up to 50 orders a month; the rest of this list is on the Team plan.
- Recipe costing with ingredients, packaging, sub-recipes, labour, machines and overhead.
- Suggested prices from a target markup, and price lists for retail and wholesale.
- Margin alerts when an ingredient price rise pushes a product below target.
- Customers with WhatsApp numbers, custom orders, deposits, balance payments and refunds.
- An order calendar with daily limits per product, closed days and lead time, and a day sheet of what to bake and collect.
- A sales log and a monthly P&L, so you see profit, not only revenue.
- A production plan and log, purchases and stock levels.
- An AI assistant that imports recipes from a photo or a spreadsheet, and an MCP server to use your data from Claude or ChatGPT.
- Owner and helper roles: helpers can take orders and log sales but never see costs or margins.
