Bakery names: a name generator you can run on paper

Good bakery names follow one formula: one word about you or your place, plus one word about what you bake or how it feels, under three words and easy to say out loud. Maria in Austin, who bakes sourdough, could be Maria's Crumb, Eastside Loaf or Rise and Crumb. Below: the formula step by step, a worked example, 60 bakery business names by style, and the checks to run before a name goes on a box.

Home bakery names: what changes when you start from your kitchen

Home bakery names often lean on the baker: your first name, your kitchen, your street. That works well for word of mouth, since people are buying from you, not from a brand.

Two cautions. Many cottage food laws require your name and home address on the label, so pick a business name you are happy to print next to them. And avoid words like 'factory' or 'shop' if you sell only by order from home, so customers don't turn up expecting a storefront.

After the name: price before you print

The name gets people to look; the price decides whether the bakery lasts. Know what each product costs you, including your time, packaging and oven, before you order labels.

Farinu does that sum: add your recipes and see each product's cost, a suggested price for your target markup, and an alert when an ingredient price rise pushes a product below it. Costing is free for up to 10 recipes, and so are customers and up to 50 custom orders a month with deposits; the Team plan adds unlimited orders and a monthly profit and loss.

Questions

What makes a good bakery name?
Short, easy to say and spell, not already used by a bakery near you, and broad enough to fit products you may add later.
Should I use my own name for a home bakery?
It works well for a home bakery, because customers buy from you personally. It is harder to sell the business later, so pick a place or baking word if you plan to grow and sell it.
Do I need to register my bakery name?
If you trade under a name that isn't your legal name, most states ask you to file a DBA (doing business as) with the county or state. Check with your state or county clerk; this is not legal advice.
